The āSouth African Grapeā - a 1925 experimental crossing between Cinsaut and Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir originally struggled to grow in South Africa whilst Cinsaut did really well - so an attempt was made to produce a grape that yielded like Cinsaut but tasted like Pinot Noir.
The result was completely unexpected. A very dark grape that produced uniquely bold and tannic wines. Despite this āmishapā, Pinotage would go on to become a South African favorite and the countryās second most planted grape.
Dense in color, bold in flavour with notes of plum, tobacco, blackberry and liquorice! Our favourite Pinotages even offer up red fruit flavours such as raspberry and strawberry. Supporting flavours of rooibos, hosin, and tobacco round out this more than interesting varietal. Expect a bold and vibrant red - perfectly paired with meat-based and/or spicier dishes.
